SALANDIA

The island province of Salandia is best known as the homeland of the Ermariae This is not an entirely accurate description, since the great majority of Ermariae live throughout the seas surrounding Antavia, but Salandia is where the other races most often come into contact with the Ermariae. The province is made up of seven major islands: in addition to the main island, from which the province as a whole takes its name, there are also the islands of (moving from southwest to northeast) Southwatch, Kaumay, Livium, Tarono, and Susin off the western coast; and Toro off the northeastern coast. The islands of Salandia are covered by tropical rainforests, dense jungles that make settlement or cultivation of the land nearly impossible.

As such, Salandia’s economy revolves almost entirely around fishing and the sea. The Sea of Salandia and the Southern Sea are nearly always filled with small fishing boats looking for Yellowfish or the especially valuable Lancer, while the largest commercial fishing operations follow the schools of Arborfish in the open ocean off the southeastern coast.

This is not an obstacle for the Ermariae, however, who have built the majority of their settlements underground, in tunnels and caverns carved by the sea and accessible only from the water. In a few cases, towns have grown up on the surface above Ermariae communities that allow commerce between the races, with the above- and below-ground settlements connected to one another by elevators and winding stairways. The cities and towns of Salandia have a very distinctive architectural style, influenced by Ermariae sensibilities, unlike anything seen elsewhere in Antavia. The largest of these surface towns, Amarth, is the nominal capital of the province. The true capital city, Tromogantum--known informally as Tromo--is submerged and accessible only to the Ermariae; thus, the other races treat Amarth as their center of government. Besides Amarth, the other major surface settlements are Capetown, whose economy centers around the shipbuilding industry, and the fishing town of Livium. By far the largest city in Salandia is Tromogantum, but so little is known about it that--Ermariae aside--very few consider it even to be part of the province.

Despite no solid evidence ever being reported, rumors persist of a lost city somewhere deep within the jungles of Salandia called Tas Caro. According to the stories, the city is filled with treasures and artifacts from an unknown civilization that predates even the arrival of the Ermariae to the island, though how such a city could have remained undetected for so many thousands of years, let alone where any pre-Ermariae civilization might have come from (since the Ermariae are known to have created the first civilization in Antavia) are questions no one can answer.
